Foreword

The Four Moods were written over a period of several months, but are connected in that they have some common musical fingerprints. I have deliberately not given these movements specific titles, as I hope that both performers and listeners will explore the emotions the music evokes without preconceptions. But as program notes are de rigeur, I include some short descriptions here.

The first piece is optimistic in character, though that optimism is not without question marks. The second piece is full of intensity and agony, with both pleading and railing against fate. The third piece evokes a kind of white out; a sense of emotions distilled after all tears have been used up. The music of the final piece is a return to happiness, in the form of joyous celebration.

My suggestion is that these pieces should be played in the order in which they are presented here.

Heartfelt thanks to my old friend Wang Qianwei for the cover art. I know he went through all the moods to create it.
